One of Maymont's two bald eagles has died.
Liberty, the female eagle in the Richmond park's native Virginia wildlife collection, was pronounced dead Wednesday morning by Maymont's veterinarian. She had been at Maymont since August 2008.
Liberty suffered from a foot infection in October and had been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat. But the cause of death will not be confirmed until the park receives results of an autopsy in several weeks.
She shared a home with a male bald eagle, Quincy, in the Robert M. Freeman Bald Eagle Habitat and was one of the most popular animals in the wildlife collection, said Henry Bireline, Maymont's director of habitats and the Nature Center.
Quincy remains on exhibit and is doing well.
Carla Murray, Maymont's assistant director of marketing and public relations, said the two eagles were considered roommates and not mates.
Liberty was donated to Maymont by the Wildlife Center of Virginia, which cared for her after she was found in 2007 with a badly fractured left wing in a King and Queen County landfill. She received surgery to remove dead bone and infected tissue at the center.
Liberty's exact age was not known. Bald eagles live up to 20 years in the wild and up to 40 years in captivity.
