A man wanted in the June shooting death of a 22-year-old Petersburg resident was captured today by the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Alphelious Alphelus Jones, 21, whose last known address was Dinwiddie County, was arrested shortly after noon in the June 23 slaying of Brandon Mason, said Petersburg police spokeswoman Esther Hyatt.

“Law enforcement authorities found Jones thanks to overwhelming community support and cooperation,” said Hyatt, who did not disclose where he was located.

Jones was charged with murder and use of a firearm in a felony, and was being held without bond in the Petersburg City Jail.

Mason’s body was found on the morning of June 23 in the 900 block of Rome Street. Police have not provided a motive for the killing.
