Russ Palmore's passing prompted an outpouring of affection. Readers contacted the Editorial offices not only to convey their sorrow but also to express their gratitude for his presence.
A lawyer by profession, Palmore served the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia as its chancellor. The hierarchy relied on his steady counsel during years of denominational tumult.
The Faith & Values column in last Saturday's Metro section reprinted a piece Palmore wrote for the newsletter of his church home, St. Paul's Episcopal. He explained prayer's role in daily life. Worship indeed occurs outside the pews as well as in them. Many believers strive to pray without ceasing. It is not easy, and is not meant to be. Palmore gently encouraged fellow pilgrims.
During Christmas the faithful come to celebrate the Festival of Lessons and Carols, whose Bidding Prayer with gladness proclaims:
"Lastly, let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude that no man can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and whom, in this Lord Jesus, we evermore are one."
The good Russell V. Palmore Jr. made manifest is not gone but will enrich and guide those destined to seek the still proceeding star of royal beauty bright.
