Col. Gwen Bingham, the first female commandant of the U.S. Army Quartermaster School, will be promoted to brigadier general Friday afternoon in a Fort Lee ceremony.
Bingham, a native of Troy, Ala., assumed command of the Quartermaster School in November.
Her career in the Army spans 30 years and last year she was one of 12 women recognized as trailblazers in an exhibit at the U.S. Army Women's Museum at Fort Lee.
From 2005 to 2008, Bingham served as the first female garrison commander at Fort Lee.
As the quartermaster general, she oversees the training of 20,000 soldiers annually.
"I know full well, what we teach and train here in the Quartermaster School, these young men and women, many times, are going to graduate from here and link into formations that are deployed to missions around the globe," she said Wednesday. "It is incumbent upon us to make sure that we train them well."
Bingham and her family have called Prince George County home since 2000, her first permanent assignment to Fort Lee as a battalion commander. She is married to Patrick J. Bingham, who is director of military affairs at Virginia State University and is a member of the Prince George School Board.
