Virginia Historical Society Civil War exhibit honored
The Virginia Historical Society has won a 2011 Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History for its Sesquicentennial exhibition, "An American Turning Point: The Civil War in Virginia."
The local Award of Merit will be among 59 national awards honoring people, projects, exhibitions, books, and organizations at the association's annual meeting, which will be held in Richmond in September. Awards of Merit are reserved for projects. Two other award categories honor volunteer-operated history organizations and lifetime achievement.
"An American Turning Point differs from past examinations of the Civil War," said Paul Levengood, president and CEO of the historical society, "by giving equal time to the conflict as a social upheaval experienced by more than just soldiers; by giving voice to previously overlooked participants; … and by organizing the project through questions that often challenge conventional wisdom."
The 3,000-square-foot exhibition features more than 200 objects and 17 audiovisual programs. It will remain on display through Dec. 30.
