A plaque noting the civil rights battle of interracial couple Mildred and Richard Loving was found Friday on the fence around the J.E.B. Stuart statue on Monument Avenue.
A local group that typically responds to occasional vandalism of the street’s monuments then paced a protective walk around the fixture while carrying Confederate flags.
Signs also were attached to the Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson statues. No one has claimed responsibility for placing the plaques.
Hanging anything on monuments violates city policy, so city workers removed the plaques.
