Preserves around Richmond
There are 60 natural-area preserves in Virginia. Twenty have parking areas and trails.
The others are more remote, and it's a good idea to call the Virginia Natural Heritage Program at (804) 786-7951 before visiting to get a sense of what you'll face.
Here are some of the preserves nearest Richmond:
- Cherry Orchard Bog in Sussex and Prince George counties, 354 acres: Seeps, springs, orchids and pitcher plants.
- Cumberland Marsh in New Kent County, 1,193 acres: A freshwater tidal marsh and uplands along the Pamunkey River.
- Chub Sandhill in Sussex County, 1,066 acres: Once the beach of an ancient sea.
- Dendron Swamp in Sussex County, 636 acres: Cypress and tupelo trees along the Blackwater River.
- Cypress Bridge in Southampton County, 379 acres: A Nottoway River swamp that is home to some of Virginia's biggest and oldest trees.
- Hughlett Point in Northumberland County, 204 acres: Undeveloped Chesapeake Bay beaches, dunes and forests.
- Dameron Marsh in Northumberland County, 316 acres: Wetlands along the Chesapeake Bay.
- Difficult Creek in Halifax County, 819 acres: A prairie-like area with scattered pines and hardwoods.
