Richmond Police are investigating whether two children injured Monday night in a possible hit and run accident were struck by a Richmond Fire Department vehicle.
The incident occurred at 7:36 p.m. in the 1200 block of Westover Hills Boulevard at the intersection of Forest Hill Avenue in South Richmond. Police said the injured children were among a group of kids riding bicycles along Westover Hills Boulevard as heavy rains fell.
The children were taken by the Richmond Ambulance Authority to Chippenham Hospital with what officials said appeared to be minor injuries.
Richmond Police Crash Team investigators last night were trying to determine how the children came into contact with the vehicle, which apparently did not stop at the scene.
"Investigators are looking into reports that the RFD vehicle, travelling through the intersection responding to a call, may have come into contact with the bicyclists," said a statement issued late last night by Richmond Police "Some eyewitnesses allege that the vehicle continued on without stopping."
Fire department spokesman Shawn Jones said late Monday night that he was told by police that a fire department vehicle may have been involved in the accident. He said officials were reviewing dispatch logs to determine what, if any, fire vehicle may have been involved.
Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both methods are anonymous.
