Virginia Tech will launch the state's first bachelor's degree program in meteorology next year.
The program, approved Tuesday by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, will be offered in the spring semester by the geography department of Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment.
The degree will prepare students for careers in meteorology and weather forecasting with a strong emphasis on geospatial information technology. Virginia Tech spokesman Mark Owczarski said the program will take advantage of a National Weather Service Office based on campus and geospatial research already under way at Tech.
SCHEV also on Tuesday approved a master's program at George Mason University focusing on cybersecurity. The executive program in the management of secure information systems will be offered on Saturdays beginning in the fall.
GMU Provost Peter N. Stearns said the program will combine training in managerial and technical skills that are important for national security and economic competitiveness.
