Richmond police arrest man after chase
Richmond police arrested a man Tuesday after a police pursuit that began when a vehicle ran a red light at Ninth and East Broad streets.
Police tried to stop the car shortly before 11:30 a.m. and were led on a chase that lasted about 20 minutes and moved onto Interstate 64 and ended in New Kent County.
Richmond police were assisted by Virginia State Police and authorities from New Kent and Henrico counties. Police laid a spike strip that eventually caused the car to stop.
The driver, who was not immediately identified, was charged with reckless driving and felony eluding police.
Chesterfield woman found in New York City
Chesterfield County police say a 78-year-old county woman who hadn't been seen since Saturday has been found safe.
Authorities said Tuesday that Constance Bicknell was found driving in New York City, where she told police she was on her way to visit relatives in New England.
Bicknell, who was last seen Saturday about 6 p.m. after she left her daughter's house to return to her own home in southern Chesterfield. Police said Bicknell takes medication daily and has memory issues.
Three stranded on rock in James rescued
Richmond Fire Department water rescue teams safely recovered three people Tuesday evening, ages 8, 13, and 26, who were stranded on a rock in the James River off Tredegar Street.
Lt. Shawn Jones said that rescuers encountered heavy waves and hail as they set out at the height of a thunderstorm that rolled through Richmond about 7 p.m.
Jones said the river level was below the 5-foot height that necessitates the use of life jackets, which none of the three people was wearing.
The incident, which began about 7 p.m., took about 50 minutes to resolve. No firefighters were injured; the stranded bathers also were not harmed.
Man pleads guilty in Henrico bank robbery
A bank robbery case moved closer to resolution Tuesday with guilty pleas from the primary defendant who now faces two life sentences.
Christopher J. Turner, 46, of the 2000 block of Kinsley Avenue in South Richmond, will be sentenced Sept. 22 on guilty pleas to two counts of armed robbery, malicious wounding and use of a firearm. Each robbery charge carries up to life in prison.
Turner's co-defendant, Khaleel H. Hamlin, 48, of the 3600 block of McGuire Drive, the alleged getaway driver, opted for a jury trial the same day.
The two men figure in the March 10 robbery of the C&F Bank on Williamsburg Road in eastern Henrico County. As Turner fled the bank, cash in hand, he fired two shots, one of which struck a customer.
Turner and Khaleel were captured a short time later. Turner, cornered in an apartment stairwell, tossed all $828 he had taken at the arresting officer.
