Virginia outlaws synthetic marijuana

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Virginia has outlawed synthetic marijuana.

Gov. Bob McDonnell today signed bills making the drug, sometimes called "Spice" or "K2," illegal effective immediately.

The legislation criminalizes the sale and possession of the drug. Possession is a class 1 misdemeanor, while selling, distributing, or possessing the drug with the intent to sell, or distribute is a class 6 felony.

Making the drug is a felony punishable by between five and 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

"I am pleased that Virginia has now joined at least 15 other states that have taken action to protect our citizens, particularly our young people, from these dangerous designer drugs," said Sen. Mark R. Herring, D-Loudoun, who sponsored the legislation in the Senate.
