Rain barrels focus of conservation workshop
Residents can learn to build and use a rain barrel at workshops offered by the Henricopolis Soil and Water Conservation District on Thursdays in May. Workshops are scheduled for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 5, 12, 19 and 26 at the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive.
The conservation district program will provide the materials and hands-on instruction to help participants construct their rain barrels, which can help homeowners conserve water by maintaining a supply of fresh water for outdoor use.
The cost is $50. Each workshop is limited to 30 participants; pre-registration including payment is required. To register or for information, contact the conservation district at (804) 501-5175 or email hswcd@co.henrico.va.us.
Hanover 4-H plans Jamestown camp Aug. 1-5
Going to a block party means having fun, and when it is at Jamestown 4-H Camp, it means super fun.
Hanover 4-H will take campers between the ages of 9 and 12 for a five-day residential camp Aug. 1-5.
4-H camping teaches youth to make their own decisions, solve problems, and manage their resources without the help of family. Campers gain these skills while having a great time in classes like water polo, canoeing, archery, kayaking, forestry and marine science.
The fee is $235 and includes transportation to and from the camp. Only 60 youths can attend.

Disaster-preparedness classes set in Hanover
Hanover County is offering free community disaster-preparedness training classes called "Are you Ready?" The next class will be held May 10 at 6 p.m. at the Montpelier Center for Arts and Education, 17205 Mountain Road.
The class focuses on how you and your family can become self-reliant for three days following a disaster by getting a kit, making a plan and staying informed.

Mass. firm gets contract for Richmond river plan
The city is preparing to award a $490,000 contract to Hargreaves Associates of Cambridge, Mass., for a design plan for land along the James River in downtown.
The design plan, a follow-up to the Downtown Master Plan, is expected to look at ways to improve and expand public access along the riverfront, which could include Mayo Island and the site of the proposed Echo Harbour development. The plan will focus on the north and south banks of the river from the Robert E. Lee Bridge to the Henrico County line and Ancarrow's Landing.
Hopewell mayor plans Ward 1 meeting
Mayor Christina J. Luman-Bailey will hold a Ward 1 citizens meeting Monday at 7 p.m. at the Appomattox Regional Library, 209 E. Cawson St.
The agenda includes neighborhood improvement efforts, community policing and economic development.
