A 10-year-old boy was badly injured Friday night after being attacked by a pit bull in an eastern Henrico County home, county police said.
"He had multiple severe bites," said Henrico police Lt. Richard Cosby.
After a Henrico police officer forced his way into a laundry room where the dog was attacking the boy, Cosby said, the officer shot the animal and was able to grab the boy and pull him to safety.
The child was taken to VCU Medical Center, where he immediately went into surgery, Cosby said.
Henrico police received a call about 9:50 p.m. reporting a dog biting a child at the residence in the 4700 block of Hillbrook Avenue, he said.
Cosby said the caller was a 12-year-old who was a relative of the victim. No adults were apparently in the home at the time, he said.
The dog was taken to a veterinary hospital, where it was euthanized, Cosby said. Henrico authorities continued investigating the incident Saturday.
