From Bangalore, India, Gov. Bob McDonnell today sent congratulations to the state Senate's new Republican leadership team.
Last week, Republicans picked up two seats in the Senate, making it a 20-20 split between Democrats and Republicans. But with the tie-breaking vote of Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, Republicans enjoy an advantage.
On Wednesday night, the Virginia Senate Republican Caucus elected Sen. Thomas K. Norment Jr., R-James City, to the party’s top post in the chamber, declaring him majority leader.
Sen. Ryan T. McDougle, R-Hanover, was elected caucus chairman and Sen. Stephen D. Newman, R-Lynchburg, vice chairman. Sens. Jeffrey L. McWaters, R-Virginia Beach, William M. Stanley, Jr., R-Franklin, and Jill Holtzman Vogel, R-Fauquier, will serve as majority whips.
“The election is over. Now it is time to govern,” McDonnell said in a release from his political action committee, which funneled millions of dollars to Republican candidates. “This leadership team has the experience and vision necessary to transfer the energy of the recent elections into real results in the legislature that will improve the lives of all Virginians. I look forward to working with them in the months ahead.”
