The Virginia Department of Transportation is offering on its website a series of maps that show holiday traffic congestion trends.

The maps can be checked at http://www.virginiadot.org/newsroom/thanksgiving_2011.asp

VDOT says the days before and after Thanksgiving traditionally have the greatest number of highway travelers.

VDOT reminds motorists that current road information can be obtained by dialing 511; Outside Virginia, call 800-578-4111.

Current information can also be found at at http://www.511virginia.org/.

Officials said they'll also try to smooth the holiday travel season by lifting highway lane closures from noon Wednesday to noon Monday, Nov. 28.
