The health of the James River has declined over the past two years, according to a report from an environmental group.
The James River Association's 2011 "State of the James River," released this morning, gives the 340-mile river a grade of C, down from C-plus in 2009.
The group issues the reports every other year.
The report looks at key fish and wildlife species, habitat, pollution and actions to protect the river.
"In marked contrast to the James River of 35 years ago, the James River is healthier today than it has been in decades, but the kind of progress we have made toward improving the health of the river is waning," said Bill Street, executive director of the James River Association.
"Unfortunately, unless we redouble our commitment to controlling pollution flowing into the James, we run the real risk of erasing the progress we have worked so hard to achieve. This report clearly identifies the areas on which we need to focus."
