Drivers on heavily traveled Interstate 95 should avoid using the highway through Richmond this weekend, when construction work will sharply restrict traffic and likely cause major delays.
The Virginia Department of Transportation is strongly encouraging motorists on I-95 to use Interstate 295, state Route 288 or Interstate 195 and the Downtown Expressway to bypass the traffic backups.
Starting Friday at 8 p.m. and lasting until Monday at 6 a.m., traffic on I-95 in Richmond will be restricted to one lane in each direction to allow a contractor to begin replacing the Laburnum Avenue bridge.
Northbound and southbound vehicles will merge onto I-95's northbound bridge during the construction work on the span's southbound section.
Drivers on the interstate highway will face the same situation again when construction on the southbound Laburnum Bridge continues during the weekend of Oct. 28-31.
If the bridge-replacement work is delayed, the contractor might need to complete the work the weekend of Nov. 4-6.
The Laburnum Avenue bridge is the first of 11 aging bridges along the I-95 corridor VDOT is replacing in a $106 million, four-year project.
The reconstruction project covers a 7-mile stretch of I-95 between Lombardy Street in Richmond and Upham Brook in Henrico County.
