Virginia Tech landed two of its big three blue chip targets today, signing athlete Joel Caleb from Clover Hill and defensive end/linebacker Ken Ekanem from Centreville High in Clifton.
The one player the Hokies didn't get was Brookville defensive tackle Korren Kirven, who signed with Alabama.
Caleb, who projects as a wide receiver, a four-star recruit ranked No. 3 in Virginia by Rivals, made his announcement at an 8:30 press conference, and Ekanem, the No. 8 player in the state, followed suit less than an hour later.
Caleb and Ekanem give the Hokies six four-star signees in the class of 2012. That should boost Tech into at least the top 20 of the team rankings when they are updated later.
Other Central Region players who signed with Virginia Tech today include defensive lineman Nigel Williams (Benedictine), linebacker Deon Clarke (L.C. Bird), defensive back Desmond Frye (Thomas Dale), running back Jerome Wright (Highland Springs) and offensive lineman Augie Conte (Blessed Sacrament Huguenot).
Another player the Hokies didn't get was Boca Raton, Fla., linebacker Jawand Blue, a three-star recruit who decided instead to sign with Miami. When Blue called to tell the Hokies of his decision, Matt Porter, a reporter from the Palm Beach Post, also was on the call and tweeted quotes that he originally attributed to Frank Beamer. However, Porter's tweets later were removed when it was discovered that Beamer did not talk with Blue and the conversation was with Tech defensive line coach Charley Wiles.
The Hokies have received national letters-of-intent from 28 recruits, completing their 2012 recruiting class.
