One injured in house fire in Richmond's West End

One person was injured in a fire that damaged a house in the city's West End late Wednesday morning.

Authorities said the victim, a man in his early 30s, was taken to VCU Medical Center to be treated for what were believed to be smoke-related injuries that were not life-threatening.

The fire was discovered about 11:20 a.m. at a two-story brick colonial in the 4400 block of West Franklin Street.

The first firefighters on scene encountered heavy smoke coming from the rear of the house as well as its basement.

Richmond Fire & EMS Lt. Robbie Hagaman said the fire was confined to the basement, where the victim apparently lives. The cause was not immediately known.

Investigators with Radford, Montgomery County, Christiansburg and the Blue Ridge Crash team are looking into the incident, according to the release.

South African faces charges in sexual assaults

A South African man who police say sexually assaulted multiple women in Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks between 2003 and 2006 has been brought to the U.S. to face charges.

Police say Lesiba Simon Matsoake, 37, of Johannesburg is responsible for five early-morning assaults — including at least two on beaches — in Virginia Beach; Duck, N.C.; and Kill Devil Hills, N.C.

Matsoake, who previously lived in Virginia Beach, is being held on a $2 million bond at the Dare County Detention Center in Manteo, N.C., where he faces two counts of first-degree rape.
