MIDDLETOWN — The Civil War Trust is teaming up with the state of Virginia and the National Park Service to preserve 77 acres on the Cedar Creek Battlefield in Frederick County.
The $1.3 million fundraising campaign will be outlined today by the trust and local preservation groups in Middletown.
The Oct. 19, 1864, battle of Cedar Creek played a key role in the Civil War.
Union Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan's counterattack on Lt. Jubal A. Early's Confederate troops broke the back of the South's forces in the Shenandoah Valley. Nearly 53,000 troops were engaged in the battle, which resulted in 8,575 casualties.
Of more than 50,000 acres of unprotected Civil War battlefields in Virginia, about one-third is located in the Shenandoah Valley.
