Two people were injured, one seriously, in a house fire this afternoon in the 16100 block of Meridian Avenue in Chester, fire officials said.
A female occupant of the home who suffered significant smoke inhalation while trying to put out the fire was taken to an area hospital, said Lt. Jason Elmore, a spokesman for Chesterfield Fire & EMS. Her condition was listed as serious, Elmore said.
The fire was reported at 4:01 p.m. and flames were shooting from one end of the house when the first units arrived 10 minutes later.
The fire apparently started in a rear bedroom and was largely contained to that room and its contents. The ranch-style home off Harrowgate Road sustained smoke damage throughout.
Elmore said a man and a woman who lived at the home arrived to find the house on fire. The woman went inside to a back bedroom to try and extinguish the flames and suffered smoke inhalation in the process. The man, who has a history of breathing problems, was treated at the scene.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. It was marked under control at 4:30.
