As expected the Virginia Senate today approved legislation that would repeal the nearly 20-year-old law prohibiting the purchase of more than one handgun a month.

House Bill 940 cleared the panel on a 21-19 vote, with rural Democrats R. Creigh Deeds of Bath and John S. Edwards of Roanoke voting with Republicans and Sen. Thomas K. Norment, Jr. R-James City voting with Democrats.

Norment, the Republican Senate leader, was among lawmakers who supported the handgun limitation when it was first enacted in 1993.

The legislation now heads to Gov. Bob McDonnell, who is expected to sign it into law.
