1 dead in fiery crash into Bedford grocery store

One person died and another was hospitalized after their pickup truck crashed into a grocery store and caught fire Tuesday evening in Bedford County, according to the Virginia State Police.

The victims were not immediately identified.

Two men were traveling south on state Route 653 just after 8:30 p.m. when they went over railroad tracks and the driver of the 1986 Chevrolet lost control, said Sgt. Robert Carpentieri of the Virginia State Police, The truck became airborne, hit the front of Goodview Grocery Store and caught fire. 

One man died on the scene, Carpentieri said.

Rescuers airlifted the other man to Carillion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. His condition was not immediately available.
