A man faces four charges after Virginia State Police say he led them on a brief pursuit this morning on Interstates 64 and 295 in eastern Henrico County.
Robert D. Johnson, 36, of the 6000 block of Cricklewood Drive in Chesterfield County, was being held on charges of felony eluding police, assault on a trooper and misdemeanor reckless driving. Johnson also was served with a warrant from Henrico County for felony distribution of a controlled substance for a separate incident.
State police Sgt. Thomas J. Molnar said the incident leading to Johnson's arrest began shortly before 3 a.m. when a trooper stopped a 2012 Ford Taurus for driving 88 mph in a 65-mph zone on westbound I-64 at mile marker 200. As a second trooper was arriving to assist, the driver fled in his vehicle and continued onto westbound I-295 at speeds in excess of 100 mph, Molnar said.
Just east of the Meadow Road overpass, the driver stopped his vehicle and tried to let his two passengers jump from the car, but he drove off before the passengers could get out, and he struck a trooper's cruiser, Molnar said. A second trooper pulled behind the suspect’s vehicle to block him from further fleeing, ending the pursuit, Molnar said.
The two passengers were not arrested. One, a man, suffered minor injuries and was taken to VCU Medical Center to be examined.
