Although temperatures are warming and much of Sunday's snow and ice have cleared, officials continue to ask motorists to be aware of black ice and any other treacherous patches that could be leftover from the poor weather.
"Drivers still need to be cautious overnight and into the early morning," said Dawn Eischen, spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Transportation. "Even when we treat the roads with sand and salt, you still have to slow down."
Virginia State Police offer these tips in the wake of the recent wintry weather:
--Reduce speed and maintain a safe following distance. Posted speed limits apply to normal road and weather conditions.
--Remember it takes longer to stop on wet roads.
--Don't drive distracted. Drive Smart Virginia says a crash can happen within three seconds.
--Under law, you must be in control of your vehicle.
--If you lose traction, steer your vehicle in the direction you want it to go.
--Clear ice and snow not only from your windows, but from the rest of your vehicle including headlights, taillights and windshield wipers.
--Bridges, ramps and overpasses are likely to freeze first and could continue to be slippery after roads have been cleared.
--Always have a charged cell phone and full tank before you travel. Also, Carry blankets, some water and food in case you become stranded.
--Know your travel route and location if you are stranded or involved in a crash.
--If you are involved in a crash or your vehicle becomes disabled, you can reach State Police by calling #77 from your cellular phone.
