The Sons of Confederate Veterans will hold a national event Saturday in Richmond.
The organization has scheduled a parade on Monument Avenue starting at 11 a.m. and a National Heritage Rally at the Lee Monument from noon to 1:30 p.m.
The parade of period color guards and other Civil War re-enactors will assemble at the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles headquarters at 2300 W. Broad St. and will proceed south to Monument Avenue, then east to the Lee Monument at Monument and Allen avenues. Organizers expect about 1,000 marchers.
The rally at the Lee statue will include speakers and other presentations.
A panel discussion about minority service in the Confederate military is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 815 E. Grace St. A revival service is scheduled for 7 p.m. at St. Paul's.
The rally is the second of five National Heritage Rallies planned by the SCV, one for each year of the sesquicentennial observance of the Civil War.
This year's rally commemorates the establishment of the Confederate government in Richmond and the inauguration of Jefferson Davis as president on Feb. 22, 1862. Davis had been inaugurated as provisional president about a year earlier.
