No. 25 Virginia lost to No. 7 North Carolina 54-51 on Saturday afternoon in front of a sold-out crowd at John Paul Jones Arena.
Virginia (21-6, 8-5 ACC) had two 3-point shots that would have forced overtime, but Sammy Zeglinski missed from the corner and Jontel Evans missed from half court.
North Carolina (24-4, 11-2) had extended its lead with 13.3 seconds remaining with a Tyler Zeller dunk. Zeller finished with 20 points to lead all scorers, while Virginia's Mike Scott had an off day with only six.
Foul trouble was the issue, as Virginia's three forwards all had three fouls early in the second half, while the Tar Heels kept a clean slate. That allowed UNC to use fouls at the end of the game to deny U.Va. multiple chances to score.
This was the first game at John Paul Jones Arena to feature two top-25 teams. The Cavaliers host Florida State on Thursday on Senior Night.
