Gov. Bob McDonnell has tapped Del. Bill Janis, R-Henrico, for a $100,000-a-year political appointment in the Department of Veterans Services, just months after the lawyer gave up his House of Delegates seat to launch a failed bid for Henrico commonwealth’s attorney.
McDonnell appointed Janis effective Jan. 11 to the deputy commissioner post, which is a full-time job that boosts Janis’ salary from the nearly $18,000 a year delegate’s pay for part-time work. He also worked as an attorney in a private practice.
The position has not been filled since McDonnell took office in January 2010, according to a spokeswoman for the governor.
Janis attended the Virginia Military Institute on a Navy ROTC scholarship and in 1984, entered the United States Navy as a commissioned officer. He is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War.
After 11 years, Janis left the Navy as a lieutenant commander to attend the University of Virginia Law School.
Janis' service in the General Assembly expires Wednesday when the General Assembly convenes and his successor, Peter Farrell, takes his place.
