Science center named for ex-U.Va. official

The renovated Science Center at the University of Virginia's College at Wise has a new name.

The newly christened Leonard W. Sandridge Science Center is named after the University of Virginia's former chief operating officer and a longtime supporter of the college.

Sandridge's name was recommended to the U.Va.-Wise board by Chancellor David Prior, and the new name was approved Dec. 9, according to a written statement from the college.

Prior said Sandridge was a "valued adviser" to him and someone who has offered "invaluable" guidance and support to the college.

Sandridge retired from U.Va. in July but remains a special adviser to the university's president, Teresa Sullivan.
