A candlelight vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Friday for Adl Musa Johnson, the victim of a homicide Saturday in South Richmond.

At 4:20 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a shooting in the 3000 block of Columbia Street and found Johnson, 22, lying on a sidewalk with an apparent gunshot wound.

Johnson, who lived in the 1900 block of Raven Street, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the keyword "iTip" followed by the tip. Both methods are anonymous.

Three-vehicle crash leaves one dead, three injured

One person was killed and three others were injured in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday, a county fire spokesman said.

Police and fire received a call at 11:31 a.m. of a wreck involving a tow truck and two passenger vehicles near the Settler's Landing subdivision, at Robious Road near Knollwood Drive, said Lt. Jason Elmore, a spokesman for Chesterfield Fire and EMS.

Police said William V. Roto, 45, was traveling west on Robious in the area of Robindale Road when his tow truck drifted to the left, crossed the concrete median and struck three vehicles waiting to turn left onto Robindale. The tow truck then swerved to the right, ran off the road and struck a tree at Robious near Knollwood, police said.

Roto, of the 1800 block of Kents Mill Road in Louisa County, died at the scene of the crash, police said.

Drivers of two of the three vehicles struck by the tow truck were transported to CJW Medical Center (Chippenham) with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Mental evaluation sought for man accused in rapes

A preliminary hearing for the man accused of being the East Coast Rapist has been postponed after his lawyer requested a court-ordered mental evaluation of his client.

Authorities think Aaron Thomas, 40, is responsible for rapes and other attacks on 17 women from Virginia to Connecticut over a decade.

A hearing had been scheduled for Wednesday in juvenile court in Manassas on the most recent attack — the Halloween 2009 abduction of three teenage trick-or-treaters in Woodbridge. Two were raped before the attacker was forced to flee.

Thomas' court-appointed attorney, Ronald Fahy, said in a motion that Thomas has engaged in self-destructive behavior and refuses to communicate with him.

The hearing has been rescheduled for March 1.

Man pleads guilty to shining laser at copter

A Virginia Beach man pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to interfering with someone operating an aircraft after he acknowledged shining a green laser at a police helicopter as it searched for a fleeing suspect.

Prosecutors say Christopher Bryan Willingham recklessly endangered pilots flying a Virginia Beach helicopter as they attempted to help law enforcement find a suspect by pointing a green laser at them.
