Civil War earthworks tour slated in Petersburg
On Saturday, Petersburg National Battlefield will sponsor a ranger-guided car caravan tour that will explore Union and Confederate earthworks south of the Appomattox River.
The tour will begin at 9:15 a.m. at the Eastern Front Unit Visitor Center, 5001 Siege Road, and end at about 5 p.m. a few miles west of Petersburg. The tour is included with the park entrance fee.
During the Siege of Petersburg during the Civil War, engineers planned fortifications and soldiers built them on a vast scale. This program will focus on the Confederate Dimmock Line around Petersburg and the Union Siege line.
The caravan tour will cover military engineering terminology, techniques, theory and technology reaching even into the 21st century in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Registration is required since the tour capacity is 10 vehicles. Youth, adult leaders recognized in Henrico
The Henrico Area Mental Health and Developmental Services and the Henrico Too Smart 2 Start Coalition recognized seven youth and adult leaders for their volunteer efforts and work to improve the lives of county young people.
The 16th annual Community Champions and Outstanding Youth Awards ceremony was held Tuesday..
The program honored Amber Blair, a student at Varina High School; Alyson Johnson, a student at Glen Allen High School; Andrew Smithwick, a student at Deep Run High School; Jordan Taylor, a student at Hermitage Technical Center; Gena Jones, a counselor at Varina High School; Kevin Robertson, president of Virginia Randolph Athletic Association; and Winifred Williams, a youth and family services community outreach coordinator with MH/DS.

Electronics recycling event set in Chesterfield
On Saturday, Chesterfield County will host an electronics recycling event for county residents at the Southern Area Convenience Center, 6700 Landfill Drive.
The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The following items will be accepted at no charge: computer systems, computer accessories, printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, VCRs, camcorders, stereos and microwaves. There will be a $5 charge for each television, but there will be no charge if televisions are brought in with trash which has a $7 gate fee. Payments can be made with cash or check.
