Richmond police say a tip from a member of the public led to an arrest in the case of a hit-and-run driver who dragged a pedestrian for more than 1,000 feet.
Police today said James E. Williams Jr., 52, of the 5800 block of Orcutt Lane in South Richmond, was arrested Friday and charged him with felony hit and run.
Police said the victim of the Feb. 20 crime remains at VCU Medical Center, recovering from life-threatening injuries.
Police said the 21-year-old victim was found in the 2000 block of Kimrod Road in South Richmond, and authorities determined he had been struck by a vehicle and dragged more than 1,000 feet.
Police said the arrest of Williams grew out of a tip from a person who did not witness the crime but noticed a car leaking antifreeze, found it suspicious and called detectives, only to apologize for “bothering” them with such “useless” information. Police said that information proved critical to the arrest of Williams.
Police said detectives are still seeking witnesses to the crime, and they ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both methods are anonymous.
