Former Virginia Gov. and current Democratic National Committee chairman Timothy M. Kaine will not announce whether he intends to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Jim Webb until later in the month or early next month, a DNC official said Thursday.
Brad Woodhouse, communications director for the DNC, said that Kaine will discuss the vacancy at Saturday's Jefferson-Jackson Democratic fundraiser in Richmond and thank the many supporters who have encouraged him to run. Then he will take more time to consult with his wife and family.
The news comes just one day after Kaine spoke with President Barack Obama on the issue, and after consultation with key Democratic leaders. Kaine was on a fundraising trip to the West Coast and could not be reached for comment.
Woodhouse said it is important that people know that Kaine's decision is "a personal decision," and said the governor "won't drag it out interminably."
Kaine, a former governor in the commonwealth with favorable ratings and a strong political organization, would be considered the Democrats' strongest candidate in Virginia, considered to be a key state in Obama's 2012 re-election bid.
Kaine has previously said he thinks the best thing for the country would be to help Obama win a second term. He has also said that his personal goal, along with his wife, Anne Holton, is to find the best way to serve.
