Fifty Chesterfield County public schools employees have been spared the loss of their jobs.
After the fiscal 2011 budget was adopted in April, the school system informed 150 teachers, instructional assistants and part-time employees that their contracts would not be renewed. At one point, it was estimated that at least 300 positions would be eliminated.
But due to higher-than-expected turnover through attrition and retirement, the school system has offered 50 people — mostly elementary school teachers — re-employment in the fall.
School system spokesman Shawn Smith said those called back were the most senior employees released in the applicable areas of expertise.
Being able to call back the employees is a rare bright spot in an otherwise bleak time, said Smith, noting that nearly $80 million and almost 500 positions have been cut in the past two years.
