The killing this month of Gregory Lee Jones left family members to explain to his 6-year-old son that his father isn’t here anymore.
Today the victim’s brother, Michael Jones, and sister, Charnette Johnson, joined Richmond police Detective Jay Brissette in asking the public for any information that might help solve the crime.
“I want to know why, I want to know who — I just want answers,” Johnson told reporters, pleading for tips in the case.
Jones, 29, dropped his girlfriend off at work about 8:20 a.m. on Aug. 11, and his girlfriend tried unsuccessfully to contact him several times later that day, Brissette said.
About 6 p.m. that day, Johnson and her husband and Jones’ girlfriend found Jones’ body in his home in the 3200 block of Cliff Avenue. The home is southwest of East Laburnum Avenue and Meadowbridge Road in North Richmond.
Jones’ body was on a couch in the living room with a gunshot wound to his head, according to an affidavit for a search warrant.
“I see it every day in my head, and it’s hard,” Johnson said today, her voice breaking. “It’s hard to know someone would do that to him.”
“It’s like a bad dream,” she added.
Brissette said the killer could be someone the victim knew, a fact that Johnson said has made her suspicious of those around her. “It makes you look at everybody different,” she said.
Authorities said they have not recovered the weapon used to kill Jones.
“We have some information and some leads,” Brissette said. “We believe there’s someone out there who knows more.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 or an anonymous tips line at 514-8477. Brissette may be reached directly at (804) 337-4724.
Police have recorded Jones’ death as the city’s 25th homicide this year. One other person has been killed since then, bringing this year’s total to 26.
