Justice Cynthia Dinah Fannon Kinser was elected the next chief justice of the Virginia Supreme Court today. She will be the first woman to serve in the position in the court’s history when she assumes office Feb. 1.

She will succeed Chief Justice Leroy Rountree Hassell Sr., who has served two terms as the chief justice and is not eligible under court policy to serve another term.

Kinser, 58, is a native and resident of Lee County. She was appointed to the Supreme Court of Virginia by then-Gov. George Allen in 1997 and twice elected as a justice by the General Assembly. She is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and the university of Virginia law school.

She has served as commonwealth's attorney for Lee County and as a U.S. magistrate judge. Hassell said in a prepared statement that he is "confident that chief justice-elect Kinser will serve the court as chief justice with then highest distinction."
