A man told police he was shot early today in an attempted robbery in a South Richmond alley.

Richmond police Lt. Angela Greene said the man was taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound to the lower right leg. The man's injuries were not life-threatening, Greene said.

Greene said the man told police he was walking in an alley in the first block of East 37th Street when he was confronted at 12:34 a.m. by an assailant brandishing a gun and demanding money. The man told police that when he refused, the assailant fired several shots at him, striking him once.

The man declined to provide a detailed description of the assailant.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at (804) 780-1000.
