Richmond police weren't initially sure what they had on their hands Thursday when someone called emergency dispatchers to report a crash involving a car carrying two dogs — but no humans.
As it turned out, the report was true. But there was more to the story.
For starters, the dogs were not driving. They were apparently just innocent passengers when their human forgot to properly put the car in park at a South Richmond convenience store and it began rolling across the lot, Richmond police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said.
The owner pulled her orange Hyundai sedan into the parking lot of a convenience store at Jahnke and Blakemore roads shortly before 1 p.m. and left the dogs in the car while she went inside to shop, Waugh said.
Moments later, someone called police to report that an orange Hyundai with two dogs and no humans inside had just gone through the intersection and struck a tree.
"The car was not properly in gear" when the owner left the vehicle, Waugh said.
By the time officers arrived on scene, the owner had already gotten to her car and checked on her dogs, which did not appear to have been injured, Waugh said.
No charges were filed.
