Community colleges make Virginia better place
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
"I wish more people really knew this." That is all I could think sitting at a recent luncheon hosted by the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education to honor the philanthropists of the year from each of Virginia's 23 community colleges and the statewide foundation itself.
I was honored to be there to support my stepmother, Lynn Reams, who was nominated for the award by the great people from Blue Ridge Community College. I am very proud of her.
While I was impressed by the more than $11 million the philanthropy leaders collectively gave to the state's community colleges, I was also struck by the partnerships that were on display.
Some of the biggest employers from around Virginia and some of the biggest foundations from across the country, like the Kresge Foundation, are working with our community colleges to bring more people to higher education and prepare them for tomorrow's jobs.
Perhaps I shouldn't be surprised. When you add it all together, Virginia's community colleges served more than 400,000 people last year. No organization could have such an impact acting alone.
Virginia's community colleges are really bringing people together and benefitting us all in the process. I just hope we are not taking that for granted.
