In an interview with Fox News, Jeb Bush reminded his fellow Republicans to accentuate the positive. Opposition to President Obama is not enough. The GOP must present a coherent message to the nation.
The electorate indeed prefers accomplishment to ideology. In a session with Times-Dispatch editors, Rep. Rob Wittman, R-1st, stressed similar sentiments when he explained his constituents simply want Congress to get things done. He also said they are willing to accept changes in so-called entitlement programs such as Medicare and Social Security.
Back to Bush. The former governor of Florida advised Republicans not to blame everything on Obama. They should emphasize the constructive. Obama passes the buck to President George W. Bush with his incessant talk of the messes he inherited. Many presidents inherit difficulties. Obama's whines diminish his stature. Leaders accept responsibility from Day One.
Jeb Bush's appearance created a sense of wistfulness. Many Republicans would consider him superior to the party's presidential field. Various factors argue against his candidacy, however. He repeatedly has said he will not run next year. If he had won the Florida governorship when he first sought it in 1994, politics might have taken a different turn.
