Dalai Lama: Visibility

National Review's Jay Nordlinger recalls that in 2007, the Dalai Lama received the Congressional Gold Medal. George Bush attended the ceremony in the Capitol's Rotunda. Photographs captured the president and the Tibetan spiritual leader in amicable conversation.

Communist China was not amused.

On Saturday, the Dalai Lama met President Barack Obama in the White House. The session was closed to reporters. The Dalai Lama later spoke with reporters outside the White House without Obama at his side.

Communist China still was not amused.

Bush was visible; Obama was in-. The former stance honored the presidency.
