The state Senate and the House of Delegates have approved competing maps for congressional redistricting. Compromise has not occurred. Sen. Donald McEachin says, "The courts probably will decide" the question. The Henrico Democrat probably is right.
And if the courts make the call, then the General Assembly's Republicans will have only themselves to blame. Although neither party boasts an admirable record regarding redistricting, several years ago the prospects for independent redistricting appeared propitious. Republicans in a House subcommittee scorned right reason and spiked a reform motion after about eight seconds of debate.
Virginia Republicans could pay a price for their own intransigence.
