On Tuesday, demolition of Cloverleaf Mall began. A Kroger the size of Rhode Island will occupy the site. The mega grocery almost certainly will attract additional development.
Malls resemble urban cores. They, too, have their ups and downs. Willow Lawn, for instance, is in the midst of yet another remake. The center has been an enclosed mall and an open-air one. We still miss the Tower music store that closed as a consequence of a corporate bankruptcy.
On the day the symbolic wrecking ball slammed into the façade at Cloverleaf Mall, a Wall Street Journal story headlined "New Tricks for Old Malls" reported that mall managements are implementing new ways to lure customers. Some offer entertainments such as shooting ranges and go-cart tracks in addition to stores.
Cities often go through serial incarnations. The same may be true of the suburbs.
