Richmond needs a new baseball stadium. The Diamond opened as a state-of-the-art park; few fans would describe it now as the "friendly confines." Although Central Virginia has embraced the Flying Squirrels, the team will not stay if a new facility does not rise.
Backers of a stadium have formed an advocacy group — Ballpark Nutz — to promote their field of dreams. The organization would push regional cooperation for a park along the Boulevard.
Although final judgment must await the financial details, metro Richmond ought to summon the moxie to build a replacement for The Diamond. The public sector likely would play a role, and certainly could afford to. A new stadium would be a worthy goal not only for regional cooperation but also for regional vision.
The Flying Squirrels appeal to a range of fans; they draw from throughout an extended area. They combine entertainment with community spirit and are a blessing to the neighborhood. We wish Ballpark Nutz well. Play ball!
