Eleven months ago, the independent accounting firm Goodman & Co. gave the Patrick Henry charter school in Richmond a clean bill of health. The external audit found no "deficiencies in internal control that we consider to be material weaknesses." It said the school's financial statements "present fairly, in all material respects," the school's financial position, and do so in conformity with standard accounting practices.
That certainly contradicted the impression left by Reggie Malone, a former Richmond School Board member who stepped down from the Patrick Henry board of directors over what he considered a lack of attention to proper bookkeeping — allegations that brought a defamation suit against him from the school's former treasurer.
Now a second audit has verified the results of the first one. Harris, Hardy & Johnstone says Patrick Henry's books are in order.
This is good news for the school, and for the taxpayers of Richmond. The school has at times been subject to stricter scrutiny and higher standards than the city's other public schools — which, given its experimental nature, may be entirely appropriate. Regardless, residents should be glad to know the school has cleared the bar — again.
