The Civil War Trust says the nonprofit preservation group protected more than 2,000 battlefield acres during the first year of the sesquicentennial commemoration of the war.
The trust counts among its 2011 successes the battle against Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which abandoned its plans to build near the Wilderness Battlefield in Orange County.
The trust said it also worked with regional partners and matching grants to close 39 separate transactions at 25 individual battlefields in 12 states.
The trust is the largest nonprofit battlefield preservation organization in the U.S. Through the years it has had a role in preserving more than 32,000 acres at battlefields.
