Bus basics
Founded in 1888 as the Virginia Railway and Power Co., the transit company became Greater Richmond Transit Co. in 1973 and GRTC Transit System in 2000. Here's an overview of GRTC operations.
Who: The system is co-owned by Richmond and Chesterfield County, which bought 50 percent of the company in 1989.
Where: The company serves Richmond and parts of Henrico, Chesterfield and Hanover counties, with express commuter service to Petersburg and Fredericksburg.
What: GRTC buses serve 46 fixed routes, including express routes and the Virginia Commonwealth University campuses. GRTC also operates the CARE on-call para-transit service for people with disabilities, the RideFinders vanpool service and the C-VAN service for participants in a state employment program.
How: GRTC employs 562 people, including 267 fixed-route bus operators and 95 drivers for specialized transit services. The company operates 243 buses, motor coaches and vans.
