No driver's license, ID requests at DMV on Monday

If you want to get a driver’s license or photo identification from DMV, you’ll have to wait until Tuesday.

Because of continuing computer problems affecting several state agencies, the Department of Motor Vehicles still is unable to process requests for licenses and identification cards at its 74 customer-service centers, said DMV spokeswoman Melanie Stokes today.

Citizens can renew decals and get car titles, though, at DMV offices on Monday. “We’re hoping to have everything operational by Tuesday,” she said.

The outages began Wednesday and affected 25 state agencies, as well as the governor’s office and Northrop Grumman. Virginia hired Northrop Grumman in 2005 under a $2.3 billion contract to provide computer and communication services to state government.

Technicians for the state and Northrop Grumman have worked through the weekend to restore service for 16 agencies, and 10 of those will require a lengthy restoration of data.

The outage was blamed on the failure of two circuit boards installed and maintained by EMC, a Northrop Grumman subcontractor.
