Gov. Bob McDonnell's Commission on Higher Education Reform is holding its first full meeting today at the John Tyler Community College Midlothian campus.
McDonnell told commission members this morning that the pace of technological change has become "lightning fast," and it is up to the panel to "focus on forward-thinking approaches to ensure that our students are able to obtain a first-rate college education that will enable them to grow and compete in the 21st-century global economy."
Among other assignments, the 45-member panel headed by Dominion Resources CEO Thomas F. Farrell II will be asked how the state can get more young people educated during tight economic times that have stretched college and university budgets.
McDonnell's office, in a news release, said governor wants the commission to create a "sustainable higher education funding model."
