The cities of Petersburg and Roanoke have been awarded federal grants aimed at cleaning up lead and other health hazards in high-risk homes.
The grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Thursday include nearly $1.9 million for the city of Roanoke and $1.1 million for Petersburg.
On Wednesday, HUD announced that five Virginia housing agencies have been awarded nearly $972,000 in grants so they can help public- and assisted-housing residents find work. The grants also are intended to assist the elderly and disabled residents in maintaining independent living.
Those grants were awarded to agencies in Charlottesville, Chesapeake, Newport News, Norfolk and Roanoke.
